A hotel is a building planned and conditioned to provide lodging services to people and that allows visitors to move around. Hotels provide guests with additional services such as restaurants, swimming pools and childcare facilities. Some hotels have conference facilities and encourage people to host conventions and meetings at their property.

Hotels are normally classified into categories according to the degree of comfort, positioning, the level of services they offer. In each country the following categories can be found:

Stars (from 0 to 5)
Letters (from A to E)
Classes (from the fourth to the first)
Diamantes y “World Tourism”
These classifications are exclusively national; comfort and level of service may vary from country to country for the same category and are based on objective criteria: room size, bathroom, television, swimming pool, etc.

On a business level, the hotel can be considered a traditional company. The term “hotel industry” is often used to define the group. Its management is based on the control of production costs and the correct organization of available resources (rooms), as well as on adequate management of rates, often based on seasonal changes (high, medium and low) and on the negotiation for accommodation for groups of people as opposed to individual accommodation.

In recent years, new ways of managing hotels have appeared based on techniques known in other fields, such as condominiums or time sharing, but they are not yet a generalized system.

It should be added that in many countries spas, tourist complex hotels and so-called hospital hotels are considered hotels, and the previous classifications of quality, comfort and services are applied to them.
